Winter is here, and I already have chapped lips. So, it is time to edit my skincare regime and make it more suitable for the chilly days. I also get dry and chapped lips in summer if that makes you feel better. I mean, just know that you are not alone.
As a blogger, it is time for me to write and share this with other beauty enthusiasts like you.
How to Get Rid of Chapped Lips

Nobody loves chapped, coarse lips. And God forbid it worsens if you have lip licking or peeling habit.
Lips are much thinner than face skin and require proper care and attention. So, let’s get right in.
Reasons
Chapped lips can be due to environmental and behavioral factors, poor lip hygiene, harsh lip products, etc.
14 most common reasons for chapped lips are as follows.
1. Dehydration
Dehydration is one of the biggest reasons for dry lips. Dry lips often lead to chapped lips.
Not drinking enough water can cause overall dryness, not only to the lips. Dehydration can be due to low water consumption or excessive sweating.
Getting a habit tracker to track your water intake is useful. When you check off the habit, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment and acknowledgment.
2. Cold Weather
You would have surely noticed that your lips and even body feel more dry and rough during the cold days. This is because low humidity and cold temperatures can dry out lips and overall body.
Winter is a common reason. So, if you get dry lips during winter, know it is alright.
3. Sun Exposure
You must know that direct sunlight is not good for your skin. The same goes for your lips too. Remember, lips are just 3 to 5 cells thick. This is way thinner than your facial skin which is 12-15 cells thick.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause dehydration and irritation, eventually leading to chapped lips. Excess sun exposure can also cause pigmented lips.
4. Licking Lips
Most of us are guilty of this one. Init mate. This is a habit you need to strictly get rid of. Grab one of our Habit Trackers to get going with your plans.
This is a vicious cycle. Lips feel dry. You lick them to ‘moisturize naturally’. Licking lips leads to saliva buildup on the lips. Saliva evaporates quickly, leaving lips drier than before.
Not to forget the weird ongoing social media trend of licking lips. It appears bizarre to me and I’m Gen Z bruh. (The blog’s name should have given it away. For the uninitiated, you’re on Beauty Bruh.)
5. Wind
Strong harsh wind can strip moisture from the lips, making them dry and cracked. Anything in extreme can be troublesome for already troubled areas.
You see the sun or wind. But I am not asking you to become a vampire. This is a cause, so just adding it here for you.
6. Lip Biting
This is also part of that social media trend I guess. And of course, it is also a bad habit to drop.
Physical trauma from biting can damage the delicate skin of the lips. And we don’t want that happening here.
7. Lip Peeling
Lip peeling makes the situation so bad. Someone I know had this habit. The result was worse. Please don’t do this. Watch some aesthetic paint videos instead.
8. Irritating Lip Products
Certain lip products such as lip balms contain allergens or irritants that worsen dryness. It can be fragrances, menthol, or salicylic acid.
You should be aware of what irritates your body. Try to avoid fragranced or similar products if you’re sensitive to them.
9. Matte Lipsticks
Are you a matte babe? I am a gloss girl. Nice to meet you.
Matte lipsticks, as you already know, are matte in nature (duh). These can be particularly drying due to their formulation. So if you have dry lips issues, you can try to minimize their usage.
10. Poor Lip Care
You need to include your lips and neck in your skincare regime. And adding a lip balm towards the end while you do the flying kiss is not a ‘proper’ lip regime.
Failing to moisturize lips regularly can lead to dryness and chap-ness. (There is no such word last time I checked.)
11. Smoking or Vaping
I don’t wanna be that boring person to tell you to stop these habits. They ain’t worth it in the long run. You don’t appear cool to others. Anyhow, these habits can irritate and dry out the lips. So, yeah.
12. Mouth Breathing
I saw this video animation where they demonstrated mouth breathing. It was so not good for teeth, breath, and guess, lips. (The whole post is about lips bruh.)
I got so aware that I try to get rid of the cold ASAP to not do mouth breathing cause my nose is blocked. Frequent mouth breathing can cause lips to dry out, especially during sleep.
13. Vitamin Deficiency
The reason for chapped lips can also be internal. Enters vitamin deficiency. Deficiencies in vitamins like B2 (riboflavin), B6, or B12 can lead to dry and chapped lips. So get your vitamins girl.
14. Allergies
Sometimes, it is allergies to blame. Allergic reactions to foods, dental products, or even makeup can lead to lip irritation and dryness. So being aware helps.
How to Avoid Chapped Lips?
Being mindful of the cause and then implementing the preventive measures is the sure shot way to get rid of chapped lips.
Do’s and Dont’s for Chapped Lips
Here is a list of what to do and avoid if your lips chap.
5 Preventive Tips are as follows.
Do’s
1. Stay Hydrated – Get a smart water bottle where you can monitor your water intake via the app or smartwatch. It has sensors and reminders. This works best for lazy people and procrastinators.
Another way is to manually track your water with a habit tracker. You can also use a regular labeled water bottle.
2. Lip Balm – Wear a good dermatologist-approved lip balm with SPF and moisturizing ingredients like shea butter.
3. Lip Mask – A lip mask is a great step to add to your skincare routine. However, avoid them while your lips are chapped.
4. Protect – Protect lips from harsh weather such as winds. Use a SPF lip balm for sun protection.
5. Patch Test – Always patch test whenever you’re using any new cosmetic or dental product. As they say, better safe than sorry.
Don’t’s
- Avoid licking, peeling, or biting your lips. I know this is easier said than done. But think of smooth pouty lips. You want that, right?
- Don’t use any lip scrub while you’re getting rid of chapped lips. You don’t want to irritate an already damaged area.
- Avoid fancy lip balms and lip products. So bid adieu to fragranced or other fancy lip products you get for the sake of packaging.
- Skip matte products too as they’re drying.
