11 Common Hair Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Hair

You prolly know some already. But I have still included them cause we all didn’t know them once. Thanks for bearing and I hope you find something useful on Beauty Bruh.

Let’s get into some of the most common hair mistakes to avoid.

10 Helpful Haircare Tips For Healthy & Shiny Hair

1. Tools on Wet Hair

Imagine this scenario – you’re getting late and rushing through to get things done. Sometimes in a hurry, we style our hair without checking if it’s dry. At times, we think it is fine. Doing this once or twice won’t matter much.

It’s a common hair mistake. Using hair styling tools on wet or damp hair is a no-no. Make sure your hair is dry before using styling tools.

The only exception is the hair dryer as its main function is to dry your hair. Avoid straightening, curling, or styling. You should not use any straightening brush, flat iron, curling iron, etc.

Damp hair is vulnerable and adding heat to it causes irreversible damage. It leads to hair breakage, frizzy and dry hair, and even hair thinning.

2. Microfiber Towel

Wet hair has more elasticity. Regular towels absorb hair moisture leaving them dry and rough, also prone to breakage. That is something we don’t want. Better use a cotton towel or a microfiber towel.

Microfiber towel soaks in water faster and more efficiently than cotton wrap. Also, don’t rub your hair while drying. Instead, gently pat in.

Tip – Use your old cotton T-shirt as a hair wrap.

3. Protect Hair in Shower

It is not your hair-wash day. Just a regular shower day. You better act like it. A reusable satin shower cap to your rescue. But wait, why do you need one in the first place?

Hair is porous and more prone to absorbing everything around it. It even absorbs smoke. During the shower, your hair is more likely to soak in humidity and moisture in the bathroom.

Humidity, moisture, and water are not something good for your hair as they lead to dry, coarse, and rough hair. I forgot frizzy. Use a cloth wrap or a usable shower cap, whatever works for you.

4. Hot Water

Heat is not good for your hair and you already know this. Similarly, hot water ain’t it for your hair. It damages your hair by stripping off natural oil off your hair. Hair loses moisture and becomes rough and super dry.

An easy fix is to use warm or cold water as it locks in moisture and hair looks visibly better without being frizzy.

5. Dirty Hair Brush

Already doing so much for your hair? When you are putting in effort but still ain’t seeing any results, the most likely culprit is your hair brush. Hair smelling bad, damaged hair, and rough, dry hair are some of the issues caused by uncleaned hair brushes.

Hair trichologists suggest washing your brushes and combs once every month. When was the last time you cleaned your dirty brush?

6. Shampooing Twice

Not double shampooing is a regular hair mistake. Shampooing twice is beneficial and suitable for you if you use lots of hair products, wash hair less often, have a greasy scalp, or oily hair.  If your hair doesn’t feel clean after shampooing, you prolly need double shampooing.

If you’re lazy or don’t have much time, you can switch between regular and double shampooing. But try to add it to your hair routine. It works wonders for oily scalp and dry hair combo.

The first wash removes excess dirt and buildup while the second wash actually cleans your scalp thoroughly. All thanks to first wash, shampoo actually reaches your scalp and is able to do its job.

7. Hair Oiling

Different type of hair requires different durations of oiling session. You need to wait at least 30 minutes before washing your hair. Washing it off instantly won’t allow oiling to do its magic.

Oiling for long or overnight is not recommended generally. It is recommended to keep it maximum for a few hours.

Be gentle while oiling and don’t forget a light scalp massage of 2 to 3 minutes after the oiling session. I wrap my hair after the massage and get going with my self-care routine. (I mostly overlap oiling with pampering shower sessions.)

8. Scalp Massager

Using a scalp massager frequently does more harm than good. Also, try to avoid inflexible plastic ones as the bristles are stiff and hard. I still use a silicone massager to scrub my scalp gently once a week. It cleans product buildup, dirt, and grime well without ruing my nail art.

How many times should you use it?

It depends on multiple factors such as the number of hair products you use, your hair wash schedule, and your hair concerns. Eg. If you have healthy and thick hair, you can be lenient.

9.  Shampooing Hair Ends

Shampoo is made for scalp cleansing. It cleans product buildup and dirt from your scalp. Hair roots need thorough basic cleaning. You should apply it to your scalp and gently massage it to spread it out evenly.

Often times we squeeze the length of hair and rub it against the scalp. Avoid shampooing your mids or tips.

10. Conditioning Scalp

Conditioner is for hair mids and ends. Do not apply it to your roots or scalp. You don’t want clogged pores right after the amazing hair wash you just had. It is just equivalent to wasting your product as it does no good. Contrary, it does damage.

11. Regular Trimming

You need to regularly trim your hair ends. Monitor your hair in sections and cut the split ends if any. Regular trimming is a smart way to grow out your hair.

What happens if you make hair mistakes?

If you are making these hair mistakes, your hair will be damaged over the course of time. Hair issues can also start arising. Hair thinning, excessive hair fall, hair texture change, and shineless frizzy hair can occur.

How to know if your hair is damaged?

Damaged hair speaks from a mile away. But often we can’t tell for sure when it comes to our own tresses.

Take 1 to 2 inches of your hair ends between your fingertips and rub it gently. You can feel your hair texture. Also, observe your hair closely while feeling it.

Look for these signs to know if your hair is damaged.

  1. Dull lifeless-looking hair.
  2. Moistureless hair – Looks dry, coarse, and rough.
  3. Knots and tangles easily compared to healthy hair.
  4. Natural hair shine isn’t visible.
  5. Split ends and flyway hair. Symbolizes hair breakage but not from roots.
  6. Frizzy hair
  7. Unevenness or change in hair color.

Can damaged hair be repaired?

Yes, The good part is that damaged hair can be repaired. Here is how.

  1. Use products curated for damaged hair and specific hair issues that you’re facing.
  2. Avoid heating tools and hot water to your hair temporarily.
  3. Use a hair protectant before using any tool if you have to. Wait at least 30 seconds after applying the hair protectant. Don’t rush, let it soak in and do its job.
  4. Avoid the abovementioned hair mistakes.
  5. Use a wide-toothed hair comb.

You do need a healthy and nutritional diet alongside a complete sleep cycle. You should consult a trichologist for guidance if you need additional help.
